The Evolution of Christmas Cocktails

Holiday cocktails have come a long way from the days when Grandma would serve grocery store bought Egg Nog spiked with cheap bourbon, rum or brandy. This rather pedestrian concoction did serve its purpose however, warming the insides and numbing the feet a bit on chilly Christmas Days.  Closely related to the ubiquitous Egg Nog were other hot toddies like the Tom and Jerry or a Hot Buttered Rum. Even though many a cup of hot egg nog and the other more traditional hot toddies are still consumed, today’s holiday cocktail choices have greatly expanded. Many of the new choices deliver more sophisticated and refined flavors, paying homage to the American cocktail renaissance that has taken place over the course of the last several decades. Today’s top flight Christmas cocktails run the gamut of flavor profiles. A holiday drinker can now choose a refreshing vodka or rum based libation or go with a bolder whiskey based drink. Of course the hot toddies are still around, but with variations that include flavors and spirits in line with the palates of today’s more discerning cocktail consumer. And for the more adventurous holiday drinkers, some tequila and mezcal based Christmas concoctions have appeared on the scene as well.

History of the Christmas Cocktail Pop-up Bar

As a way to bring a special brand of Christmas cocktail cheer to their New York City holiday guests, New York based Cocktail Kingdom  hosted its first Christmas cocktail pop up bar in the city for the 2014 holiday season. The holiday pop up was such a hit, the folks at Cocktail Kingdom decided to take the concept they refined in The Big Apple and bring it to cities all over the world. Over the years, the cocktail pop up has gradually expanded to include 80 locations for the 2018 Christmas season. These Christmas cocktail pop-ups have allowed the ever expanding and increasingly sophisticated cocktail communities in these major cities to enjoy some kitschy holiday décor, an innovative and delicious selection of high quality Christmas cocktails and the nostalgic energy of the best office holiday party ever!

Only Christmas Cocktail Pop-up site in Dallas

By hosting this event, HIDE is the only Dallas establishment to offer its guests this special Christmas cocktail pop up experience. The one of a kind event starts November 23rd and runs through December 30th. The themed Christmas cocktails served during the pop up are all created by Miracle’s renowned New York City bartenders, with HIDE’s bartenders ensuring each recipe is closely followed to create the exact cocktail desired. In addition, HIDE’s own signature cocktail and food menu will be available during the entire span of the pop-up. All the themed Christmas cocktails will be served in Cocktail Kingdom’s custom Miracle glassware, from mugs to coupes, highballs and rocks glasses. This glassware will be available for purchase at HIDE, with 10% of the glassware proceeds benefiting Action Against Hunger – the perfect gift that keeps on giving.

Christmas Fun Zone at HIDE

Once HIDE was chosen for this special Christmas cocktail event, HIDE’s “Christmas elves” have been working overtime to create a Christmas fun zone that all our holiday guests can enjoy! These industrious elves have left HIDE fully decked out for the holiday.  The décor is complete with thousands of Christmas lights and retro ornaments, lighted holiday trees as well as colorful ribbons and bows. Every piece of art on HIDE’s walls has been Christmas wrapped, with large “presents” now adorning the walls where pieces of art once lived. Other wrapped Christmas gifts are found hanging from the ceiling as well as scattered throughout the space. In addition, famous scenes from vintage Christmas movies will be projected all day on HIDE’s large screens. And, to finish off the Santa’s playground that is the pop up, seat backs will be adorned with familiar red Santa hats and candy cane tablecloths will grace every table.
